Early 1900s carousel giraffe from the North Tonawanda, NY carousel works
of Herschell Spillman. The striding figure of pleasant visage appears in
gaily painted glamorous trappings: an ornate saddle with fanciful foliate
motifs sits upon a swirled and rippled saddle blanket, an extravagant breast
piece composed of chevrons and lozenges with lappets and borders wraps the
chest while jeweled and fringed bands form the headstall. As it came off
the carousel, old paint showing seams, chips and scuffs. 59 long x 72 high. |
